There’s been a major development in UK–EU pet travel rules this week.
As part of recent trade discussions, the EU and UK appear to be moving towards an agreement that could bring back pet passports—meaning the days of the Animal Health Certificate (AHC) may be numbered.
What We Know So Far
The return of EU pet passports is being considered
AHCs may be phased out, reducing costs and paperwork

For now, you still need an AHC to travel with your dog, cat, or ferret from the UK to the EU or Northern Ireland (excluding PTD changes for Northern Ireland as of June 2025).
What This Could Mean for You
If pet passports return, it could simplify travel and reduce repeat vet visits. A single, long-term document would replace the current system that requires a new AHC for every trip.
This would be great news for frequent travellers heading to France, Spain, Portugal, and other EU destinations.
What to Do Right Now
Until official guidance is released, you must continue to travel with a valid AHC.
